Overview

This 1991 gazetted area with the first Gorilla group, Mubare, availed for tourism in April 1993, is most famous for Gorilla trekking with over 500 Mountain Gorillas. It has a great biological diversity endowed with 400 plant species. In 1994 Bwindi was declared a UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage site. Bwindi impenetrable is a stretch of 321km2 of tropical rain forests with thick canopies, some say you can easily get lost in this forest if you wander off from the group you’re tracking with. Gorilla tracking is done in groups of 8 per Gorilla family in different parts of the park. There are 36 Gorilla families in Bwindi and only 15 families are habituated for tracking.

Wildlife in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi forests that date back to about 25,000 years are more famous for protecting an estimated 500 Mountain Gorillas, roughly half of the world’s population. Bwindi is not only home to mountain Gorillas commonly referred to as,” The Gentle Giants” but also to over 350 bird species, making it a perfect birding destination, forest elephants and antelopes have also been seen in this forest as well as other primates like Baboons, Chimpanzees, and various monkeys.

Those that have been to this park know that it gets pretty cold, especially at night and early in the morning, temperatures range from 7°C-25°C and it is encouraged for visitors to have a few warm clothes. The best time to visit this park is preferably in the drier months of June- August, and December to February, making the roads more accessible because they are not slippery.

Activities that can be done in Bwindi include Gorilla trekking, birding, nature/forest walks, cultural encounters with the local communities mainly the Batwa people, and research tours on different plants.
